The management of planning in tactical air combat
PETER PANEC · 1991
In a highly dynamic combat environment, goals for a tactical aircraft pilot will be continually modified in response to the changing combat situation. Multiple planning processes in the aircraft avionics are invoked by the goals, creating the potential for conflicting plans. In this paper, we present an approach to managing multiple planners so that the planners produce coordinated plans. Our planning manager primarily performs three major functions conflict resolution, goal management, and planner scheduling. We present an approach to conflict resolution which avoids most conflicts during plan generation without requiring extensive crosscommunication between planners. This paper presents the conceptual design of the planning manager plus results from a first prototype implementation.
