Recent developments in digital data transforms

R. Wiegand · 1981

Transform technology is highly efficient interface between sensors and/or controllable analog elements on the one hand, and specialized digital signal processors and/or general purpose computers on the other hand. It is particularly appropriate where the analog transfer functions are nonlinear or otherwise in inconvenient form, and the combination of high data rates and high resolution are required. Random Access Memories (RAMS) are employed to transform digital words with a single clock pulse. This paper reviews this technology, specifically describing the class of problems for which it is appropriate, lists and defines the terminology employed, and presents various mechanization options. The main emphasis of the paper is a discussion of the detail design methodology. Numerical calculations are presented where it is felt that a generalized discussion could be too abstract to be useful. The paper concludes with a discussion of recent design experiments and suggests concepts suitable for future research.
