An Evolutionary Approach to Autonomous Fault Management
Ksenia O. Kolcio · Infotech@Aerospace 2012 · 2012
This paper discusses the concept of implementing model-based Fault Management (FM) within a state-based control architecture as a partial step towards increased autonomous capability of spacecraft. This approach involves integrating a model-based FM system such as Marple with a state-based control architecture such as the Mission Data System (MDS). Only the Health and Safety aspects of the MDS control architecture are implemented using Marple, leaving nominal operations to other aspects of the control software. Potential benefits of this evolutionary concept include leveraging existing designs that have been partially validated; buying down more risk compared to “all or none” approaches, fullfeatured solutions; and ultimately achieving greater levels of autonomy for aerospace systems.
