§Regres sion test ing play s a key role in the evolution of software systems and represents a significant cost -driver . This paper describes the steps that the European Space Agency (ESA) is taking in order to achieve a reasonable degree of automation of the regressi on testing campaigns . ESA’s generic mission control system software h as been the target for the test automation, but t he results can be easily extrapolated to other software systems. The work carried out so far has provided a generic framework for test aut omation. The framework can be combined with almost any arbitrarily selected test tool and programming language. In addition to the application s that make -up the framework, this work has identified the main interfaces that need to be implemented as well as the minimum set of requirements that the software under test has to meet in order to achieve automation. The framework is currently be ing used to test the latest release of the mission control system software .
