A Flow of Energy: Density 21.5
Marion A. Guck · Perspectives of New Music · 1984
The soundstream of the flute in Density 21.5 begins in a tight burst of energy that shoots forward, wobbling here and there, holds back and surges forward. A sense of steadily increasing energy prevails until measure 24, when, suddenly, the flow is suppressed. In measure 29, the particles of the soundstream shoot out of an aperture at high energy, running wild, striking each other and, in the collisions, exploding, reforming, and shooting off suddenly in new directions. In measure 52/2,' the stream stabilizes at a higher energy level than the opening, and that state is projected beyond the close of the piece.2
