If, for example, two groups of subjects responded with the word 'short' to the stimulus-word 'long,' though only one group had been specifically instructed to respond with an opposite, we wished to learn how the average response-times of these two groups might differ. By comparison of identical word-associations in the two situations it was felt that the effect of the subject's set upon his reaction-time could be determined while all of the other factors which might affect the reactiontime would be controlled.
