Magic Wall: A Multi-Monitor, Computer-Controlled Installation

This article describes a large-scale video installation using 16 television monitors, 4 video recorders, and a specially built, computer-controlled video switcher. The installation exemplifies certain creative possibilities of computerized multi-image environments. The contemporary background of multi-image installations is discussed briefly and the authors explain the conception and realization of the Magic Wall, a versatile display format for combining computer and video technology in a work of art. The basic configuration of this collaborative piece is described, and the artists give accounts of their individual activities with the installation.
