Javelina: An Environment for Digital Signal Processing Software Development

Kurt J. Hebel · Computer Music Journal · 1989

Javelina is a software environment for the development of discrete-time signal processing systems. It is written in the Smalltalk-80 programming environment and includes notation editors and tools for digital filter design, mathematical optimization of state variable systems, and the generation of optimized machine language programs for a variety of digital signal processors. Prior to the introduction of general-purpose digital signal processors (DSPs), the design of special hardware was required in order to get many signal processing algorithms to execute in real time. The new, general-purpose DSP hardware need only be designed once, but a new program must be written for each algorithm, typically in microcode or assembly language. The time spent in software design now exceeds the time spent in hardware design. This paper describes Javelina, an environment for the development of software for digital signal processors. This environment translates discrete-time systems into the machine language of any of several digital signal processors. Javelina includes facilities for manipulating, evaluating, and measuring the discrete-time system throughout the development process.
