The evolution of a fault-tolerant design - Contractor milestones andevaluation

David A. Rennels · 1987

This paper discusses the methodology for developing a highperformance fault tolerant computing system from the viewpoint of a project manager. The objective is to: (1) produce a prototype which will serve as the basis for a production version, (2) perform a thorough evaluation to determine its performance, dependability, and fault coverage at all stages of its operational life, (3) analyze the risks, costs, and shortcomings in its design and technology, and (4) establish the level of confidence needed to proceed with its production and deployment. The approach is to specify the various major design steps and the deliverables required, and to propose methods for evaluating contractor performance at each of the milestones.
