In this paper, we propose an improved LEACH multi-hop algorithm based on residual energy and region distribution (LEACH-ERM) through the analysis of shortages of the LEACH protocol in selecting cluster heads and single-hop communication mechanism. The new algorithmimproved LEACH-ERM, divides all sensor nodes into several collections with the same number of nodes based on the principle of the shortest distance, then selects several collections, among which the maximum-energy node is selected as cluster head, according to the distribution of these collections. Finally a multi-hop communication link between cluster heads and sink is established according to weight. The simulation results of Matlab indicate that compared with the conventional LEACH algorithm, the improved LEACH-ERM algorithm produces an evener distribution of cluster heads, effectively reduces the energy consumption of the network, and thereby prolongs the lifetime of the network effectively.
