Morphing technology which transforms one shape into another has been used to make special effects in movies. This paper presents a three dimensional image morphing method without source to target object correspondence. This method applies to voxelized objects with full color texture. The algorithm consists of three parts, Decision of the regions to be transformed, calculating distance images for those regions and interpolation by using morphology operations. First, expansion or contraction regions are decided from the position of two shapes. Secondly, the distance images of those regions are generated to interpolate the shapes. This approach uses Minkowski difference to compute the metamorphosis. As a result, an automatic interpolation process is executed at needed frames. Some experimental results demonstrated that this method is more effective than previous methods for volume-based metamorphosis.
