This paper describes recent developments of the SOLAR hybrid mesh generation system. The addition of an option for unstructured tetrahedral meshing in the far-field, outside the near-field advancing layer mesh, is detailed. The provision of a buffer mesh layer between these two regions is described; the buffer mesh enables the necessary transition from the hexahedral and prismatic elements of the advancing-layer to the tetrahedral elements in the far-field. Implications for the required mesh quality in the advancing-layer mesh are discussed, and the resulting modifications to the advancing layer algorithm described. Some validation results using the current meshing method and the RANS flow solver TAU on realistic 3D aircraft geometries are presented. Developments in 2D hybrid meshing for high lift applications are also shown.
