A Robotic Rescue Graphical User Interface Integrating Multi-Robot Sensor Fusion

Daniel P. Stormont, Matthew D. Berkemeier · 2004

Using robots to supplement human rescuers in the urban search and rescue arena has been a topic of intense research over the last several years. This paper describes the rationale for using robotic rescue teams, both in the real world and in the annual RoboCup Rescue competitions. In particular, the design of a graphical user interface that provides a different view of sensor data depending on the needs of the user is described. This GUI integrates sensor data from multiple robots to provide a probability estimate for the location of items of interest in the environment. The design of the GUI is described in detail, along with an implementation of the GUI on a pair of commercially available robots with multiple sensors operating in a simplified rescue environment. A plan for future work is also presented.
