A Systematic Derivation of Analog to Digital Converters

TEJMAL S. RATHORE · IETE Journal of Education · 1996

Flash analog to digital converter (ADC) is the fastest one. However, it requires increasingly large number of components (comparators and logic gates in the encoder) with the increase in the bit length N. The hardwere complexity can be reduced by cascading lower bit length converters. One such converter is derived with just N comparators and no encoder. From this converter other converters can be derived using the fact that the working of a comparator remains unaffected if both the inputs are either multiplied by the same factor or increased by the same amount. Thus by suitably modifying the inputs to the comparators and realizing these inputs using difference amplifiers, weighted resistors and DACs, we have derived three different ADCs.
