With the advances in the technology, the use of distributed mobile sensor networks (DSNs) has been increased to large number of applications such as environment and habitat monitoring, traffic control, military applications, etc. The optimal deployment of DSNs plays an important role in extracting the information about the particular area. However, in the hostile and dynamic environment the deterministic deployment of DSNs is a difficult process. The deployment carried out in such an environment is of uneven topology and thus far from optimal which results in poor utilization of the available sensors and short life of the network. In this paper, fuzzy logic based energy efficient self organizing technique has been proposed for improving the coverage of DSNs after the initial random placement of the sensors. Fuzzy logic has been applied previously to the deployment of DSNs and was successful to overcome most of the limitations of other algorithms. However, sensor’s present energy level was not taken into account in decision making and therefore the method was not very powerconscious. As the self-deployment process is energy consuming and energy is the main operating constraint, it is necessary to utilize the limited energy of each sensor in a reasonable manner. It is shown through the simulations that our approach not only achieves a fast and stable deployment that maximizes coverage but also optimizes the overall energy consumption during deployment, thereby prolonging the lifespan of the network
