The Evolution of Information Systems for Urban Administration

OVER THE PAST DECADE AND MORE, formal attention to information handling in urban governments has resulted in the emergence of a new field-the urban information systems field.1 It has evolved from several approaches to information system development. Each demandzd different computer capabilities, focused on different problems of administration, concerned different groups, and represented different conceptions of an urban information system. These approaches are classified here as the housekeeping, databank, model-building, and process control approaches.
