"Demystifying the Impact of Crowdsourcing Innovation: What Happens with ""Not Invented Here"" Ideas?"

Michael L. Tushman · Academy of Management Proceedings · 2014

Today’s organizations are increasingly experimenting with crowdsourcing for innovation as a way to source new fresh ideas. However, there is much mystery and little evidence on the impact of such ideas on organizations. For one, new ideas may clash against old ideas — a well-known “Not Invented Here” (NIH) phenomenon. Secondly, organizations may not have the absorptive capacity necessary to evaluate such ideas. Thirdly, new ideas may require adaptation and new organizational capabilities currently lacking. In this symposium, we will draw on findings from latest qualitative and quantitative studies to discuss whether and how crowdsourced ideas impact existing experts and organizations.
