An Expert System with Speech Synthesis for Troubleshooting Grain Combine Performance

John Kenneth Schueller, Robert M. Slusher, Stephen M. Morgan · Transactions of the ASAE · 1986

ABSTRACT INDIVIDUALS in remote locations such as farm equipment operators, are commonly faced with problems for which they lack readily available sources of information or expertise. An expert system was developed to alleviate some of those situations by providing aid in the adjustment, repair, and maintenance of grain combines. The system acts as an aid or consultant in situations of performance degradation by determining problem causes and suggesting potential corrective actions. The hardware and software were developed so that information would be conveyed to the user in textual and verbal forms. The personal computer expert system utilizes a LISP inference engine and a binary tree knowledge base. Speech is achieved through a general purpose text-to-speech algorithm and a speech synthesizer.
