Can patterns increase the reliability of embedded hardware-software co-designs?

Michael J. Pont · 2000

In this paper we have suggested that the need for systematic co-design techniques is particularly evident in small microcontroller-based embedded applications of the type now common, for example, in modern automotive products. We have argued that appropriate software patterns may have a role to play in this process. One of our main concerns is to develop techniques which improve the reliability and safety of embedded systems. It seems likely that the availability of appropriate patterns can contribute to this, but detailed empirical research is needed in order to determine whether this is the case in practice. (9 pages)
