Group Additive Synthesis

Additive synthesis makes possible sophisticated control of arbitrarily complex timbres of pitched tones. Accurate copies of sounds of acoustic instruments can be obtained with the use of the data derived from the analysis techniques of the heterodyne filter (Moorer 1977) or the phase vocoder (Portnoff 1976; Moorer 1978; Dolson 1986). Another advantage of this technique is that all of its input parameters have direct physical meaning in acoustics. As this sort of language is familiar to most of the possible users, the problem of a human interface becomes easier than with many other techniques.
