Zheng Yue, Dong Sui, Yingda Lin, Junfeng Zhang · AIAA Modeling and Simulation Technologies Conference · 2015

The current air traffic system has nearly reach its limit and cannot accommodate the increasing air traffic demand. As a result, systems-engineering practices are being used to developed and evaluate the future new technologies and new concepts for air traffic control. This paper describes the approach for creating a multi-agent based simulation system that captures the interaction between key components within the air traffic operation system. The specific design of some intelligent agents, such as: aircraft agent, ATC automation systems agent, and air traffic controller agent were presented. A distributed simulation structure was introducued which can simulate thousands of end-to-end airspace operations. Wind data were modeled in the system result in accurate trajectory predictions. The system has been used to support simulation of an whole day civil air traffic operation in China. A through evalution of the system has been performed, confirming that it can scale up a very high number of complex agents operation simultaneously with full detailed models.
