The Application of the Extreme Value Distribution to Network Traffic Assessment
James J. Wilder · 2013 Aviation Technology, Integration, and Operations Conference · 2013
During network operations, different levels of traffic exist for varying time intervals as a function of operational needs, overhead traffic, and potentially, traffic generated from cyber attacks. Consequently, throughput performance can be assessed in statistical terms. Fluctuating network traffic flow size distributions are modeled as stochastic processes to assess transmission rate traffic performance as a function of demand and available capacity. When traffic congestion exceeds the maximum capacity for the network under analysis, network performance is affected. Network design is interested in the intensity rate, defined as the probability the traffic reaches a value equal to or larger than this threshold value. This paper applies the extreme value distribution (evd) to describe this behavior.
