The ever-pungent Will Rogers once quipped: "Politics has got so expensive, it takes a lot of money even to get beat with. "And that was almost 50 years ago—before television, marathon cross-country flights, and the advent of all the other modern accoutrements of electioneering. Were Will alive today, even he might be speechless at the spending spectacle that our Presidential campaigns have become. Candidates and ordinary citizens alike decry the practice. Yet like an avalanche it seems to sweep all before it; and although regulations have been enacted in recent years, no one as yet has figured out a way to stop the quadrennial side show. Indeed, the American public seems reconciled to it as some sort of American folkway. But as ACS approaches its own election, members needn't feel too smug.
