Implementation of Context-Aware Application Model in Smart Environments

As various computing resources are ubiquitous in everyday life, the number of computers per user is rapidly increasing. However, if a number of computing resources react only to user’s explicit input, it is inconvenient to manipulate a lot of computers whenever a user needs them. Context-awareness enables generation of context by analyzing situation of users and environments so that applications can autonomously react to contexts without user’s explicit commands. However, most context-aware applications have been tightly coupled with sensors that only provide information dependent on specific purpose of an application. It is necessary to remove the tightly coupled connection between sensor and application so that any application can exploit contexts from any sensor that is ubiquitous in everyday life. The contribution of this thesis is a novel model for a context-aware system, a unified context-aware application model for ubiquitous computing environments (ubi-UCAM).
