Simulation of Vocal Fry
Ingo R. Titze · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1974
Some special types of vocal fry have been produced with a multi-mass model of the vocal cords (described at earlier meetings). Special attention is given to the peculiar double-pulse vocal fry. During the first pulse the vocal cords gain only a moderate amount of vibrational energy from the air stream. The glottal width is small, and the successive first closure is brief. Since energy loss occurs primarily during prolonged approximation, most of the energy of the cords is maintained during the first pulse. During the second pulse the cords gain additional kinetic energy from the air stream, resulting in both an increased glottal width and a more rapid closure. Virtually all the energy of the cords is dissipated in this second, rather prolonged, closure. This two-step “pumping” process can be repeated indefinitely. A three-step pumping process is also possible.
