Task Uncertainty and Subunit Communication Structure.

Michael L. Tushman · Academy of Management Proceedings · 1978

Using information processing ideas, a set of hypotheses are developed to test a contingency approach to subunit design -- do high performing subunits facing different information processing requirements have different degrees of communication structure? The results largely support the hypotheses and indicate that there is no one best way of structuring subunit communication. Rather, for high performing subunits, communication structure is contingent on the nature of the subunit's work.
