Automation in Gynecologic Cytology

Ivan A. Chebib, David C. Wilbur · Pathology Case Reviews · 2011

Automation in cytology can now be considered a mature topic. For the past 2 decades, the field has seen research and development leading to clinical processes and devices and finally to the widespread adoption of technology in the clinical cytology laboratory. This review will cover currently applicable technology, including liquid-based preparation methods and automated primary screening instrumentation. It will detail the general and specific features of each technology and provide data that have been developed in support of the clinical application of each method. New issues of workload and accuracy will be presented, and the implications of human papillomavirus vaccine implementation and its effects on the current screening paradigm will be discussed.
