An Investigation of the Speed-Flow Relationship in Two-Lane Rural Roads
Matthew G. Karlaftis, John Golias · 2002
The present paper is concerned with examining the relationship between traffic flows and traffic stream characteristics (heavy vehicle traffic and opposing lane traffic) for rural two-lane roads in Greece. By gaining a better understanding of the relationship(s) between these factors more effective and efficient policing strategies can be planned. In this research Box-Cox regression is used to examine these relationships. The results clearly indicate that the relationships between vehicle speed, traffic flow and traffic stream characteristics are highly nonlinear; further, the results indicate that, in two-lane roads, opposing (oncoming) traffic flows are extremely important in determining vehicle speeds, as are the percentage of heavy vehicles in traffic and the time of day.
