Phase spectral analysis of the auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to click stimuli of different intensies and without stimuli was performed in 20 normal adults. At each stimulus level, a collection 10 groups of ABRs, each consisting of 200 sweeps, was used for calculating the phase variance by fast Fourier transform. The phase variance for selected frequency components making up the ABRs was compared to the ABR morphology, and the sensitivity of this phase spectral analysis for the automatic detection of response threshold is discussed. It was found that the mean phase variance calculated from 97.7 to 293.0Hz frequency components was a good predictor for detecting ABR threshold. The results show that this procedure is accurate enough for automatic ABR threshold detection.
