The test room
H. Bowden · 2003
This paper discusses what work is like inside the test room. The firm of Elliot brothers moved from St Martins lane to Lewisham and built Century Works. They described themselves as electrical engineers and it is evident that they had the foresight to provide the test room with all the plant needed for the growth of this industry for at least forty years. All the D.C. instruments worked on the moving coil principle, though in a vast range of sizes and types, and they all had to have springs soldered at both ends. Another room adjacent to the test room was where the magnets that were prepared by two of the youngest boys who spent most of their time there. Basically, there were different types of works in different rooms, and different electrical instruments were used for ex. voltmeters, switchboards etc. (9 pages)
