This paper evaluates the effect of re-sequencing performed by the Selective-Repeat ARQ (Automatic Repeat Request) over a satellite channel, and shows that it causes significant delay and generates undesirable bursts of packets in output traffic. To reduce the re-sequencing delay and the number of packets included in a burst, this paper proposes a per-flow re-sequencing, where re-sequencing is independently performed for each IP flow while ARQ is performed for the whole IP traffic. Simulation results show that the per-flow re-sequencing reduces the delay and suppresses the size of bursts. Concerning the implementation of the per-flow re-sequencing, new architecture using a pointer is introduced to achieve scalability with respect to the number of possible IP flows and to reduce associated overhead.
