While aerodynamic shape optimization methods have been around for quite some time, most of them utilize a handful of variables in order to parameterize the blade profile and focus on a number of optimization goals to find the optimum blade profile through an iterative process. While the current methods provide a robust and reliable 3D optimization method and result in promising results even with randomly initialized blades, they are fairly time consuming and demand high computations. This paper presents a novel CFD simulation-based approach for 2D shape optimization of gas turbine blades which enables achieving aerodynamically optimized profiles quickly and without high computational demands.
