Recently, several efforts have been directed towards developing a joint time and frequency representation for signal analysis. For a time-varying signal, whether a deterministic transient or nonstationary random signal, the use of a discrete pseudo-Wigner distribution (WD) is especially suitable. Analyzing several types of time-varying transient signals by the WD, we can illustrate their dynamic features in the two-dimensional #(2D) time and frequency domain. Application of the WD, however is often complicated by the occurrence of interference terms. In this paper, the interference mechanisms are discussed, and to suppress the interference terms, a newly revised WD, Called reduced interference distribution (RID), is proposed. The RID method is applied to analyses of both simulated and instrumental signals such as impact sounds and voices whose natures are all time-varying. Analytical results obtained from the RID are superior to those from the traditional WD.
