Curbing opportunism in buyer-supplier relationship: A QCA study on effective governance mechanisms

Martina Luetkewitte, Thomas Mellewigt, Glenn Hoetker · Academy of Management Proceedings · 2013

Researchers agree on the drivers and the detrimental effects of opportunism, but still lack consensus regarding the choice of appropriate mechanisms that effectively curb opportunistic behavior. We are able to match contracts, relational and formal governance mechanisms with four different kinds of transaction hazards for our sample of 137 buyer-supplier relationships from the German automotive industry. Using an innovative fuzzy-set QCA methodology, we can show that, particularly in more complex situations, the use of single counteropportunism mechanisms is not sufficient and a combination is needed. In this regard, our findings further stimulate the development of new theory on alliance governance.
