Summary To our knowledge, this is the first study to use a new evolutionary optimization algorithm, inspired by the life history of the avian family of cuckoos, to address the gravity inverse problem. We discuss the solution for the inverse problem of determining the shape of a fault whose gravity anomaly is known. To do this, we use a novel evolutionary algorithm suitable for continuous nonlinear optimization problems. The optimization algorithm is inspired by the life history of a bird family, called Cuckoo. Application of the proposed algorithm to address difficult optimization problems has been shown to be appropriate when tested using various fault models such as: normal, reverse and vertical.
