Automated assembly of structured grids for moving body problems

Davy M. Belk, Raymond C. Maple · 1995

The Beggar CFD code successfully combines blocked and overlapped grid techniques in a single code, automatically setting up grid communication for moving body problems with relatively little user input. Data structures are presented that provide fast, robust determination of geometric relationships. The data structures, which are expensive to build, can be reused as the grids move. Tests of the grid assembly algorithm shows that point classification time is insensitive to the number of blocks, but is sensitive to the point distribution within a grid. The performance of the grid assembly algorithm is demonstrated on a generic wing, pylon, and store grid. Examples of one, two, and three bodies in motion are given to verify the performance of the method for moving bodies.
