PERFORMANCE TRADE-OFFS OF TCP ADAPTATION METHODS

Parallel streams and the ow-control adaptation have been proposed as methods for overcoming the throughput limitations of existing transport protocols. While these methods have been very eective in simulations and implementations, only a few high-level explanations exist in understanding the actual network conditions that give rise to the performance improvements. By utilizing qualitative models for TCP and a generic simulation scenario, we demonstrate the conditions under which each of the techniques excels. In short, parallel streams perform best when the network suers from high packet-loss conditions while the adaptation of ow-control windows performs best under low packet-loss rates. 1
