The modern age of specialization has created many reading problems for the scientific and technical man. Yet, because editors have generally misunderstood the basic nature of the reader's problem, they have followed the course most likely to be of least help to the reader in solving these problems. The editors of the AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY'S applied monthly magazines, however, have refused to follow a path they believe to be a blind alley. Instead, they believe that by the use of selective editing plus selective reading aids their magazines are built to meet the needs of the modern specialist.
