ON-LINE TUTORING TAKES HOLD

Roughly a year ago, Larry D. Strawser, a chemistry professor at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., was looking for ways to learn more about distance learning. About the same time, John R. Krikau, project manager for "Chemistry in the Community," a high school program developed by the American Chemical Society's Education Division, was polishing his speed in researching topics in education on the Internet. Cruising their home computers, both stumbled across America Onlines Academic Assistance Center, which offers tutoring in virtually all subjects for students from grade three through graduate school and beyond. Fascinated by their find, both quickly volunteered to tutor chemistry. "The first time I wandered into a tutoring room, I was just amazed," Strawser says. "I went from one room to another.
