Summary Double-layer flood fill is a seed-spreading technique suitable for large-scale and spatial horizon auto-tracking. It uses two-level queues instead of one-level queue and uses the same four-way flood fill algorithm to implement horizon auto-tracking. It is not only meet the requirements of accurate horizon auto-tracking under the condition obeying the rule of the classical flood fill, but also can remarkably reduce computer resource consumption and heighten horizon-tracking efficiency in large- or ultra lager scale 3D seismic surveys. Double-layer flood fill technique has been improved from classical flood fill for seismic horizon auto-tracking and borrowed some benefits from block partition algorithm. In this paper, we first discuss the theory of double-layer flood fill algorithm, then introduce a typical workflow which can be used to implement spacious horizon auto-tracking, and show a real 3D horizon auto-tracking example finally. The satisfactory quality of horizon auto-tracking based on above technique proved that double-layer flood fill is an effective 3D horizon auto-tracking algorithm.
