Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is an emerging technology with potentially unlimited capabilities in a broad spectrum of applications. Space exploration is a sector that WSNs could provide significant solutions with limited cost. Thus, in this work we attempt to present the issues and challenges that arise from the employment of WSNs in space exploration, through a specific application. This application is the development of WSNs on the Mars Planet surface. This work focuses on nodes deployment, the effective coverage of the monitored area, as well as issues on the communication part of nodes and the transfer of the collected data back to earth.
