Physiologic Correlates of Acoustic Correlates of Psychological Stress
Thomas Shipp, Robert E. McGlone · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1974
A volunteer young adult male subject was interrogated during part of an experimental procedure studying phonation. Hooked-wire electrodes were in place in laryngeal muscles. Simultaneous audio and physiological recordings were obtained of the subject's responses to the interrogation questions. Playback of the audio recordings through a Dektor PSE-1 often showed a differential pen deflection indicating “high stress levels” when the subject was knowingly fabricating his responses. Unprocessed EMG tracings obtained from the cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles associated with the answer are shown along with f0 and the acoustic signal.
