The International Telecommunication Union

Jamal Shahin · 2015

This chapter shows how the literature examining the internet and telecommunication sectors examines the contribution and role of the European Union in the institutions that have emerged at the global level. It outlines some of the literature that discusses the European Union (EU) role in the governance of global telecommunications, specifically looking at its role in the multilateral organisations charged with management and coordination at a global level. The chapter introduces some of the key institutional actors in the domain. It explores the literature that looks at how these organisations, such as the International Telecommunication Union and the relatively new Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers have evolved, and how the literature has treated the role of the EU therein. The chapter focuses on the EU’s performance in the institutional landscape of the internet by Christou and Simpson in this collection, by placing the internet in the context of broader discussions on the information society.
