ProSonus Studio Reference Disk and Sample Library Compact Disks

Joseph B. Rothstein · Computer Music Journal · 1989

ProSonus seems to be staking out a niche for itself by developing a line of compact disk (CD) products that serve the computer music marketplace, and their efforts have yielded impressive results. For example, the ProSonus CodeDisc provides a handy, low-cost method for striping tapes with SMPTE time code. The CodeDisc was reviewed in Computer Music Journal 13(1), 1989. Another clever product is the ProSonus Studio Reference Disc (SRD). It contains a comprehensive series of test tones, which were recorded entirely in the digital domain. By programming a CD player with the appropriate SRD tracks, an audio engineer, electronic musician, or technician has almost instant access to a multifunction test generator. In almost 70 min of running time, SRD includes tracks of white and pink noise in steady-state bursts of different lengths, 1/3 octave and full bandwidth; 30to 6-sec sine waves in 17 bands ranging from 15.525 Hz to 16.0 KHz, speaker phasing checks, two different control room checks, numerous musical pitch reference tones, acoustic piano listening tests, and a wide variety of specialized audio test tones.
