An on-line Computer-GC data handling system is described which monitors up to thirty chromatographs simultaneously. The system utilizes the IBM 1130 computer with 8K word core storage and 500K disk storage. Three Teletype stations plus a local-operators console (LOC) for each of 30 channels provides the system I/O. The parameters used in retrieving and performing data analysis (e.g. peak names, times, peak sensitivity, calculation mode, etc.) are supplied by the operator, through I/O conversation, in the form of a “METHOD”. The method provides the flexibility required to cope with the variations in chromatographic data and instrumentation. The system has software provisions for area reallocation between merged peaks and compensation for peak integration on tailing peaks or drifting baseline. The system calculates relative retention times (using up to three reference peaks) and retention indices on request. Analysis results can be calculated as area percent, mole percent, or weight percent by internal or external normalization. The results are generated at the termination of the analysis and can be stored for later summary or retention index reporting. Among the numerous other software options is a programmed feedback loop for activating valves, auto-injectors, etc. for automated GC processes. The system was interfaced successfully with research and production chromatographic equipment.
