A Review of Electronic Music Instruments
Karl Hirano · Computer Music Journal · 1996
New technologies and components for mass production of electronic music instruments are required by the electronic music industry to continue to improve product quality. Historically, the phrase germanium transistor reminds me of my first experience designing low-pass filter circuitry for an electronic home organ. I remember that for this instrument, sound quality was very satisfactory because of the use of many carefully selected discrete components-transistors, resistors, capacitors, etc.-in one instrument. Also, I had learned that product quality in the total production line sometimes suffered from the tolerances in the electronic characteristics of each component when used under a wide range of ambient temperatures, supply voltages, etc. To supply trouble-free products, we had to spend many hours resolving these problems before an actual production run.
