An Improved Method to Determine Heat Production From Gamma-ray Logs

Transit time picking is a fundamental step in sonic processing techniques. Hence, the time-picker algorithm is required to be both very accurate and very reliable. Unfortunately, due to the nature of sonic waveforms, classic time-delay estimation techniques cannot be applied easily; information criteria such as the Akaike Information Criterion, Short Term Average/Long Term Average, or high-order statistics are typically used. The objective of this work is to extend the Akaike Information Criterion to two dimensions for the design of a multichannel time picker that is compatible with sonic shot gathers. Following this step, first-break picking becomes a surface feature identification problem. Gaussian and mean curvature are, therefore, used to detect the P-wave arrival times in a shot gather.
