Conducting the MIDI Orchestra, Part 1: Interviews with Max Mathews, Barry Vercoe, and Roger Dannenberg
Richard Boulanger, M. V. Mathews, Barry L. Vercoe, Roger Dannenberg · Computer Music Journal · 1990
During the past year, I conducted a series of interviews that focused on real-time, MIDI-based performance systems. I spoke with three system designers and three composers who used their systems. Under the heading Conducting the MIDI Orchestra, these six interviews will be presented in two parts. In the first part, presented here, I focus on the systems designed by Max Mathews, Barry Vercoe, and Roger Dannenberg. In the second part, which will be published in the next issue of Computer Music Journal, I will look at the musical application of Vercoe's Synthetic Performer by Noel Zahler, Dannenberg's MOXC by Gary Lee Nelson, and my own use of Max Mathews's Conductor program.
