Morris Rockwell International Space Transportation Systems Division 12114 Lakewood Boulevard Downey, California 90241 This paper investigates expert systems (ES) verification and validation (V&V) issues and their applicability to and affect on the development and production of operational ES software. V&V terminology, the role of prototyping, the importance of requirements, and the translation of requirements to design and design to code are first developed. Next, V&V, performance evaluation, and similarities and differences between ES and conventional software are identified and discussed. This is followed by a discussion of ES standards and tools and concludes with practical recommendations for V&V of deliverable ES.
