The widespread usage of multimedia data in the internet makes media content protection important. Internet telephony, internet conferencing, internet security monitoring, pay-per-view, video-on-demand, medical image transmission, interactive video games are some of the real time applications that require confidentiality. Mathematical algorithms called cryptographic primitives formed the basis of the security. Cryptographic primitives are the cryptographic algorithms such as encryption schemes, hash functions and digital signature schemes. These schemes satisfy several essential security requirements for networks, computers and data against a diverse set of threats. Modern cryptography is divided into two branches: symmetric-key cryptography (Symmetric Encryption) and public-key cryptography (Asymmetric Encryption). The two main types of modern symmetric encryption algorithms are Block ciphers and Stream ciphers. The objective of block cipher is to provide confidentiality or secrecy to the data in communication transactions. Block ciphers play larger role in the internet, wireless networks and computing devices against active or passive attacks. A number of block cipher techniques have been proposed in the literature to protect the digital data and can be classified into three categories: i) full encryption ii) Selective encryption and iii) Combined compression-encryption.
